We are always entranced by this time of year around the holidays. Is it any coincidence that the celebrations of Christmas and Hannakah and other winter holidays happen when for much of the world, the weather outside is filled with grey skies and long, dark nights. Traditionally, farmers would work hard during the spring, summer, and fall, and rest during the winter months. As someone who lived in Moscow for 2 years, it is easy to sleep 10 hours a day during the winter time. What to do with the time not working? The wisdom of our forebears combats seasonal depression with joy and giving to others. Now, we have have "progressed" with modern appliances and no longer have the enforced stillness and rest thrust upon us by the elements. However, perhaps we can take extra time for reading, making, and giving. We can reclaim some of the patterns of our ancestors as an antidote to the business that plagues both our mental and physical health.
Here are the best books and activities to suggest to help you slow down and savor the wonder of these holiday moments!
