The following statement on art and environment in Catholic Worship has been designated as a companion to the 1972 statement of the Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy entitled Music in Catholic Worship. The publication of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and subsequent liturgical rites and documents along with the pastoral experience of implementing post-Vatican II reforms place us in a position to reexamine existing places of worship and to make informed decisions about their appropriateness. Furthermore, an awareness of liturgical needs and objectives, now clearer than a decade ago, provide guiding principles for the preparation of new places of worship. Everyone called to worship must be concerned about the vital role art and environment play in the central action of the community of faith, the household of the Lord.
